Housing and Dining
UTokyo's Housing Office operates dormitories and other accommodations for international students and researchers. Students and researchers can also apply for both long- and short-term accommodations, and information on rentable accommodations via private agencies is available on the Office’s website. Several cafeterias and other eating establishments are run by the CO-OP on UTokyo's campuses.

UTokyo operates several residence halls that are open to international students. Applications are open twice a year in Spring and Fall and can be made through OSTA (Online System for UTokyo Accommodations).

Private Apartments
Approximately 75% of UTokyo international students reside in private rental housing (as of the 2021 academic year). The Housing Office’s website provides helpful advice on how to search for privately leased apartments, and explains the procedures, customs, and other features of Japan’s rental system.
Rent varies according to location, room size or surrounding environment. Generally, monthly rent for a one-room apartment runs in the range of JPY 60,000 to JPY 100,000 in Tokyo. You will need to pay the equivalent of 4 to 5 months’ rent upon contract to cover the costs of the deposit (SHIKIKIN), key money (REIKIN), agent’s commission, and initial rent.

Each dining hall has different hours of operation and offers different items on their menu allowing you to have a variation in where and what to eat. They also offer special meals that meet the needs of students who follow a variety of dietary life styles.
